The ship was built in 1995 by Jiangnan Shipyard Shanghai, China. She was delivered on 30 October 1995 and placed in service on 1 November of that year. Nippon Maru is operated with Tokyu Car Carriers, a NYK subsidiary. The "MMSI" designation is a reference to the IMO Ship Identities Manual, where "M" stands for "merchantman," "S" for "scow," and "I" for "intermediate." Passenger ships registered in other countries such as Panama, the Marshall Islands, and the Bahamas use US vessel classifications, which use the letter "V." From 1986 to 1990 Nippon Maru was named Kensan and between 1988 and 1991 she was named Hokusan. Both of these names referred to the God of Wealth in Shinto mythology and the main God in Buddhism respectively. From 1991 to 1999 Nippon Maru was named Kenzan Maru. In 1997 the ship caught fire and burned for three days. Two crew members died and ten were injured in the blaze. Nippon Maru has undergone a $80 million refit of the ship's superstructure and overhaul of the propulsion and steering systems. Nippon Maru is capable of operating within the No.2 oil tank (4,800 barrels) in the ship's hold or the No.1 tank (11,000 barrels) as well as the No.2 and No.3 tanks (4,800 and 4,000 barrels) if necessary. From 29 July to 31 August 2012, Nippon Maru was stranded at the port of Mombasa, Kenya due to fears of piracy. The captain and crew abandoned the ship while high winds made it unseaworthy. Nippon Maru left Cape Town, South Africa for Kobe, be359ba680
